Banks' vision and progressive nature may be seen in works ranging from portraiture, garden paintings, and interiors, as well as in major figure works at the studio or in plein air. Stylistically, Banks relates most closely to the naturalist painters of nineteenth-century France, particularly Jules Bastien-Lepage, the naturalist movement's chief proponent and greatest practitioner. Allan studied with two very fine artists, Richard F. Lack and R H Ives Gammell. The early years were spent working from nature and carefully studying the Masters which entailed copies from original masterpieces. The painting process became more a search for finding a way of seeing nature than simply recording nature.
